A Penn State student blog that rates the safety of college towns named ASU its top "unsafe" school. It cites NeighborhoodScout, which scored the area 4 out of 100, where 100 is the safest. The post lists 5.08 violent crimes and 36.63 property crimes per 1,000 residents, or 41.70 crimes per 1,000 in total. Arizona's violent crime rate is 4.09 per 1,000.

NeighborhoodScout now scores Tempe 5 out of 100 using 2024 FBI data, meaning it is safer than only 5% of U.S. cities. Your chance of being a victim of violent crime there is 1 in 207, compared with 1 in 237 statewide, and your chance of a property crime is 1 in 33, compared with 1 in 56. The same blog post notes that the area around ASU is considered among the safer parts of Tempe.

ASU's side / contextASU has not responded to these rankings. Its official campus crime figures are in its annual Clery safety report.
