Tempe Police arrested hundreds of underage drinkers in raids near ASU in 2024 and 2025, including 173 in one raid at Tempe Tavern in spring 2025 and 249 people under 21 in a second raid there in November 2025, mostly for fake IDs and underage drinking. Tempe Tavern, a longtime college-crowd bar near Apache Boulevard and McClintock Drive, abruptly closed in September 2026.

Police say the November raid followed a fatal hit-and-run in which a 19-year-old ASU student charged in the crash had been drinking at the bar. State regulators recommended pulling its liquor license in March 2026, and days before it closed, state liquor investigators linked it to a second deadly crash on U.S. 60 in Mesa that killed an 82-year-old woman.

ASU's side / contextThe bar disputed police claims after the raids. Its management and attorney did not respond to requests for comment about the closure.
